In 2024 a total of 44 Academy Award nominations were for productions shot on film. Christopher Nolan’s gripping biopic Oppenheimer was the year’s most-nominated film, with 13 total nominations, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark comedy Poor Things with 11 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s historical crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon with 10. All three productions were shot on film.
Cinelab Film & Digital were very proud to have supported several of nominated productions. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, was lensed by cinematographer Robbie Ryan on 35mm film, with film scanning and film deliverables created by Cinelab.
Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which received seven nominations, was lensed by cinematographer Matthew Libatique on 35mm film, with UK processing and scanning by Cinelab.
Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, was shortlisted and on the night went on to win the Best Short Film Award. It was lensed by cinematographer Bob Yeoman on 16mm film with processing and scanning completed by Cinelab.
In the end it was Oppenheimer that came out as the big winner including the Best Cinematography Oscar going to Hoyte van Hoytema ASC NSC FSF. One of a total of seven Oscars for the film. On receiving his Academy Award van Hoytema stressed the importance of shooting on film.
“To all aspiring filmmakers out there, I would like to say please try shooting with that incredible, new, hip thing called ‘celluloid’. It’s much easier than you think. And it makes things look so much better.”
Van Hoytema captured Oppenheimer, in IMAX (15-perf) format using KODAK 65mm large-format film, including, for the very first time, sections on 65mm B&W, also shot in IMAX.
